A Simple, Natural Approach to Maternity Styling

Why Styling Matters in Maternity Photography
Styling a maternity session can feel really challenging, but it is one of my very favorite parts of what I do as a Boston maternity photographer. I truly love helping my clients find something that makes them feel both comfortable and beautiful during pregnancy. That balance matters so much, because when you feel good in what you are wearing, that confidence and self love shows in your photos.

The Beauty of Minimal, Bare Belly Styling
When it comes to styling Massachusetts maternity photos, one of the looks I am always drawn to is a more minimal, bare belly approach. I especially love this with the linea nigra and/or stretch marks. It’s all beautiful! This can be something like an open button down, a soft sweater, or a simple cropped tee paired with a flowy skirt or linen pants. These combinations feel effortless and allow the shape of your bump to really stand out. I love seeing all the different shapes and sizes that a bump can be, and just how beautiful pregnancy is in every stage.

Alternatives to Bare Belly Looks
That said, not everyone feels comfortable with a bare belly, and that is completely okay. There are so many beautiful alternatives that still photograph just as well. A long, flowy dress can create a really soft and romantic feel, while something more form fitting can really show off your bump by making it the star of the show. It really comes down to what feels most like you.

Styling for Outdoor Sessions
For outdoor maternity sessions, the styling should feel connected to the setting. For example, a beach session calls for movement and softness. Something flowy and textured works so much better with the natural elements like wind and water. A more structured, form fitting dress might feel out of place in that environment, even if it is beautiful on its own, but could be great in downtown Boston or a studio.

Matching Your Outfit to the Location
One of the biggest things I guide my clients on as a Massachusetts maternity photographer is making sure the styling fits the environment. What you wear should make sense with the location we choose. For a studio maternity session, we have a lot more flexibility since the space is a blank slate. You can truly wear almost anything and make it work.

Keeping Styling Simple and Stress-Free
Styling plays such a big role in how your final images feel, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. My goal as a Boston and Massachusetts maternity photographer is always to guide you through the process so it feels easy, natural, and true to you.

When to Schedule Your Maternity Session
As a Boston maternity photographer, I often get asked about timing. It is typically ideal to take maternity photos somewhere around 28 to 32 weeks, when your bump is more defined. But I also really love an early second trimester session. There is something so subtle and special about that first little appearance of a bump, just barely peeking out above a waistband or skirt. It feels quiet and understated in the best way, plus it’s just so cute!
